Overview: start
Welcome to data.lotek.com, Lotek’s webservice for displaying various data generated by Lotek products. We hope that you will find it useful and intuitive.
When you logon for the first time, you will see a straightforward layout. The left side contains the main menu, which provides access to the functions available to you, which in turn will depend on your User Permission Role. As a Standard user, you will have access to your Projects, Tags, Account and Guidance, where Projects are the Lotek version of the Argos Program. The remainder of the screen displays a header panel related to the function selected, with data and user actions displayed below.
In the header panel, there will be field family options listed that you can select/deselect to display fields of interest below.
In the main screen panel, rows of available data will be displayed, e.g., Tags, Projects, etc., with relevant data displayed depending on the fields selected.
At the right side of the main screen panel, there will be a list of available user action icons as to how to display the data relevant to the row of interest, e.g., data table, map, etc.
Overview: tips
Search functions: three vertical dots will be commonly found located adjacent to the left of a field; clicking on the three vertical dots will open up a search bar for that field.
Order display functions: an arrow will be commonly found located adjacent to the right of a field; clicking on the arrow, depending on its orientation (up or down), will display the data listed in that field in either alphabetically or numerically, with numbers appearing before alphabetic names.
Reverting to the previous page: going back on the site is accomplished simply by clicking on your browser’s back arrow at the top left.
Tag end of life: although it could be indicative of a change in animal behaviour or other temporary anomaly. In the Tags display, if the “Last Location Date” is earlier than the “Last Collect Date”, this could indicate a weakening in the transmitter’s energy supply and nearing its end of life – it is best to wait 10 days or so to clearly see a pattern.
Time filter in Map View: a slider bar in the header panel equipped with a date scale allows you to manipulate two pointers so as to set the beginning and end dates of the period of observation.
Clear filters button: this button is active if there is a filter applied to the data view.
Tags
In the header bar, what is “Copy shareable link of current filters” icon?
Clicking on this icon will copy a link that can be pasted into an email or otherwise shared.
In the header panel, there are field family options listed that you can select/deselect to display fields of interest below.
At the right side of the main screen panel, select from a choice of available user action icons as to how to display the data relevant to the row of interest, e.g., data table, map, etc.
Why is the Tags last collect/location date newer than the displayed data or locations?
The processes that collect transmissions, decode sensor data and update reporting tables are staggered on a four hourly cycle, so there is an upto four hour lag between tag transmissions being saved and becoming visible in the data or map views.
Why do Tag users only have standard and viewer roles available to select?
Within the Tag function, a user cannot have Project Administrator privileges – they can only view the data shared with them.
Tag Details
The Tag Details view has a few user actions which include:
Full Refresh Reporting tables - the next time reporting tables are updated, delete existing records and update for this tag.
Refresh reporting tables - the next time the reporting tables are updated, this tag will be included.
Reprocess Sensor Data - the next time Sensor Data is decoded, delete existing decoded sensor data records and reprocess for this tag.
Queue Argos Request - the next time the Argos CLS is queried for transmissions, this tag will be included.
Projects
In the header panel, there are field family options listed that you can select/deselect to display fields of interest below.
At the right side of the main screen panel, select from a choice of available user action icons as to how to display the data relevant to the row of interest, e.g., data table, map, etc.
User Action: Data
Displays a table of data associated with an individual (or group) of tag(s)/platform ID(s).
Displays both collects and locations.
User Action: Map, can display:
a variety of basemaps;
locations linked with lines to form tracks;
a summary of the location data at the location point;
a summary of the track data at the midpoint of the line between two points; and
clusters to group sets of locations in such a way that locations within the same cluster are more similar to each other than to those in other clusters, depending on the scale of observation (level of zoom).
Filters
In most user actions (located at the right side of the main screen panel, which determine how the data is displayed), there is a “Filters” icon. Clicking this icon will open up the Filters window. A variety of filter options will be available, depending on the user action, noted in [].
Atlanta filter[Data]: only associated with the K2 Series products, this allows one to choose which messages are displayed.
Date filter [Data/Map]: allows one to select the time period of interest.
Clicking on the Min or Max dates will set the date to the respective limit.
Ticking on “Include pre shipment dates” will allow on to view production verification testing data.
Location Class filter [Map]: allows one to choose which Locations based on the associated Location Class.
Product filter [Data]: allows one to select from the available data; the data available will be dependent on the product configuration refer to your usermanual.
Tags filter [Data/Map]: within the Projects function, allows one to select multiple tags for simultaneous display.
PinPoint Fix Status
Sometimes the data sent to the Argos satellites can get corrupted. Our processes check for corruption, and try to correct it. This results in three types of data.
Good: the data has not been corrupted.
Corrected: an attempt has been made to correct the data, but there may still be an error in any part of the data, e.g. date, location or sensor data. These can be shown on the map by selecting the “Error Locations” checkbox within the filters.
Failed: the data is too corrupted to attempt a correction.
Note that fixes are transmitted several times, so although you may see a failed or corrected location, that does not mean that you do not have a good copy of the fix. Sometimes you may see a corrected location next to a good location, because there is still an error within the corrected fix.
Project Administrators: what additional functions and features are available?
Tag Details:
Download data files; and
Check Argos for Last Days activity: a refreshing of the data from the CLS site, earlier than automatically scheduled.
Add Users [from Tags]:
Invite new users; and
Add existing users.
Project Details:
Download data files.
(Manage) Users [from Projects]:
Update Role;
Set and update alerts:
New Collect Threshold (days): how many days to wait after the last collect to send an alert of a new collect; 0 is off;
No Collect Threshold (days): how many days to wait since the last collect to send an alert of no new collect; 0 is off;
No Collect Frequency (days): after receiving the first notification of no new collects, how many days to wait to send a reminder of no new collects; 0 is off; and
Fortnightly Summary: every two weeks, the system will send a Project Summary, reporting the level of activity of each tag.
Edit Project:
Update Project Name; and
Update Project Credentials.
Report Bug: loads an email client with a pre-addressed email to report any system non-conformance.
Collect Alert Duration
New Collect Alert Duration
The option to be alerted when a new transmission has been received for a project or tag for the configured duration. Zero indicates no alert.
No Collect Duration; Mortality indicator
The option to be alerted when no new transmissions have been received for a project or tag for the configured duration. Zero indicates no alert.
Reporting Tables
The various location and sensor database tables are flattened into a pair of database tables to improve website data retrieval times and server load.
User Permissions
There are three user permission roles.
Project Administrator - can administer the project and associated tags and share them with others.
Standard - can view data for projects and tags that have been shared with them.
Viewer - can view a limited time range of data from projects and tags that have been shared with them. Not yet implemented.
What timezone are dates and times displayed in?
All timestamps are displayed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
